What Are Some 'Musts' While in Malta?
In Valletta, don’t miss St. John’s Co-Cathedral, where you can admire one of Caravaggio’s most famous works: The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. Also visit the Grandmaster's Palace, the official residence of the current President of Malta, dating back to 1574. Another is a ticket Casa Rocca Piccola, a 400-year-old palace that was home to Sir Pietro La Rocca, Knight of Malta. Check out this palace's many rooms, and its stunning furniture, artwork, and more. This palace is not far from Fort Saint Elmo, an imposing fortress that played a vital role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, during which the Ottoman Empire sought to overthrow the Knights Hospitaller, but were ultimately unsuccessful. In Mdina, grab a ticket to Mdina Cathedral & Museum. This historic Baroque cathedral is one of the most important in the country, and features colorful frescoes, beautiful polished marble, Irish wood altarpieces, and stained glass windows that are sure to impress! Also visit Bastion Square, a veritable treasure trove of history. This square also provides fantastic views of the city and the local Rabat. Just 3 miles (5 kilometers) from Midina are the stunning Dingli Cliffs, which stand at a stunning 820 feet (250 meters) in height. and provide incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Malta's Beaches and Coves
Aside from cultural activities and simply enjoying Malta's picturesque towns, there are also a number of fantastic beaches and coves waiting to be explored! Our favorite is probably the Blue Grotto. In this grotto, you'll find a number of beautiful sea caves, which appear to have been carved into the cliffs.
Don't confuse the Blue Grotto with the Blue Lagoon! The Blue Lagoon is another essential when visiting Malta. Here, water is crystal clear, the weather is gorgeous, and you have brilliant food trucks at your disposal for lunch or drinks.
If you're looking for a beach day, Golden Bay is another brilliant option. A favorite amongst tourists and locals alike, this long stretch of beach always has somewhere for you to put down your towel and lay out in the sun. Like the Blue Lagoon, this golden paradise has great services available in its vicinity, including restaurants!
